Facial palsy can cause several complications for children, including the inability to close their eyes properly. This can be particularly painful and disruptive, especially during sleep. Fortunately, there is a solution: eye taping.
Eye taping is a technique that can be used to hold the eyelids closed and protect the eye from dryness and injury. There are two methods to tape the eyes closed; both are easy to do with suitable materials and guidance.
Method 1: Transpore Tape
Follow these steps:
1: Take a strip of Transpore tape (3M Transpore tape™) before bed.
2: Take the end and turn over a little bit.
3: Close your eyes and tap your eye shut whilst keeping both eyes closed. (You may need someone to help you with this bit).
4: Get the tape, start from the corner nearest the nose, and press the tape down right into the corner.
5: Keep the eye closed with your other finger and bring the tape across.
6: To ensure it has worked, keep the eyes closed and then try to open them.
Removal: When you take the tape off, you have to think about taking the skin away from the tape and not the tape away from the skin. Being gentle, pick up the bit that was folded over and tap the skin away from the tape as you peel it off.
Method 2: Thin Tape
Follow these steps:
1: First, you get a thinner piece of tape and turn the end over like you did with the more significant piece.
2: Put this piece of tape underneath the bottom eyelashes. Starting with the tape close to the nose, lift the tape underneath the eyelashes.
3: Get another piece of tape, hold it and turn the end over like last time.
4: Close your eyes. Tap the eyelid closed again, just like before. Keep it closed and put the tape on the same way as before, over the top.
Removal: Take it off the same way, so remember to remove the skin from the tape.
Summary
It is important to note that if your eye specialist has recommended you use eye drops or ointment, be aware that excess ointment may prevent the tape from sticking properly. In such cases, it is best to consult your eye specialist for eye care.
Eye taping may seem daunting initially, but with the proper techniques and materials, it can be a simple and effective solution to the discomfort and pain caused by facial palsy.
